  • A fine blend of old and new

    By James Gaden
Michael Ball's first solo album since 2014's 'If Everyone Was Listening' sees him returning to a sound he first dabbled with on his 2000 effort 'This Time It's Personal'. There he took a step away from the Musical Theatre genre, with which he first came to prominence, in order to explore more Country themed sounds, meshing well chosen covers with some original material he co-wrote. 'Coming Home To You' follows that formula but arguably with more success, the infectious title track showing how far Ball has come as a writer and how smart he is when choosing collaborators. The fact that originals like 'Tennessee Dreams' and 'All Dance Together' can sit comfortably next to exceedingly well known cuts like 'I Just Can't Help Believin'' and 'To Love Somebody' demonstrates not only how well crafted the new material is, but how well arranged the covers are. The album sounds like a cohesive collection of songs all delivered by Ball's phenomenal vocal work. Ball is much more than just a star of Musicals, he is a bona fide recording artist capable of crossing into a variety of genres. His fondness for Country is obvious, mining the Dolly Parton catalogue for 'Love Is Like A Butterfly' but one of his strengths, the ability to deliver emotional ballads like few others, is also showcased on the moving 'Bright Eyes' and absolutely stunning 'Lost Without You'. A welcome return from a multi-talented artist.

  • Oh dear

Oh Michael, what have you done? Sing what you know. Maybe 1 or 2 ok tracks but overly a disappointment. Such a shame. Will be No 1 album but for 1 week. Fans without a streaming service will buy it but no one else. Bring us a musicals album or duet with Alfie again.

Don’t be unfair here. That Ball voice has given us all much pleasure over the years. It is no less a joy here on a more gentle, country tinged Collection. A worthy addition to an already superb discography. Give it a try. ❤️👍
  • Depressing

How awful is this. Completely ruins some wonderful songs. Why does he keep doing all these covers? Get some original songs Michael.
